Nitty Gritty's Top Movies & TV of 2016...
So 2016 has come and gone...
... but rather than give a more traditional "best of the year" list I decided to give you the full list of EVERYTHING I watched this year, both film and television. As you can see there is quite a bit of TV, especially considering how much longer a season is than a movie.
I don't necessarily have a favorite movie or TV show* I watched this past year but I gave you a top 5 of each just for fun (even though I said I wouldn't) in addition to my master list.
I will keep the top 5 lists to movies and TV from 2016.
*that's a lie, The Sopranos was hands down the greatest TV show I've seen EVER, not just in the last year.
Top 5 Movies (in no order)
Arrival
Lost City of Z (technically a 2017 movie)
Hell or High Water
The Nice Guys
Swiss Army Man
Top 5 TV Shows (sort of in order)
The Sopranos (I had to break my own rule; I know this show isn't current)
The Leftovers
Mr. Robot
Game of Thrones
The Night Of
Homeland (I gave 6 since Sopranos didn't really count)
TV Shows Watched in 2016:
Oz (the show that started it all; worth every season even if it does 'jump the shark' big time in the later seasons)
The Sopranos (arguably the greatest TV show of all time)
Deadwood (watched after The Sopranos, a tough act to follow; I gave up about 5 or 6 episodes in)
Game of Thrones (kept current)
The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst
Making A Murderer (both these shows were gripping for sure but I'm always suspicious of calling pieces like this 'documentary'; what I'm trying to say is you can't fit an entire trial's worth of info-- let alone several people's lives-- into a 10 episode mini-series and so it can hardly be objective)
The Leftovers
The Night Of
The Newsroom (re-watch; I was feeling political)
Breaking Bad (re-watch; this show really does get better and better with each season)
Real Time with Bill Maher
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (these two shows keep me sane)
Vinyl
Westworld
Vice Principals (surprisingly more than just funny)
True Detective (season 1 re-watch)
Homeland (kept current)
The Wire (re-watched season 3 and then finished 4 and 5-- something I hadn't actually done yet)
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (went through and made sure I watched them all)
Mr. Robot (potentially the best show since Breaking Bad)
Sherlock (I tried, I really did)
Black Mirror (scattered episodes)
Stranger Things (gave up after 5 or 6 episodes)
The Man In The High Castle (gave up after 1 episode)
Narcos (best Netflix original series)
Daredevil (got 1/2 way through season 2)
Bob's Burgers (do yourself a favor, watch it)
Rick and Morty
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (I could do season 1)
Deep Space 9 (told by a friend this series could possibly get me into Star Trek, I watched 5 or 6 episodes, enjoyed them but am still not into Star Trek)
Futurama (same as for Star Trek)
And I'm ALWAYS re-watching random episodes here and there of:
House
The X-Files
The West Wing
Everybody Loves Raymond
All In The Family
3rd Rock from the Sun
I Love Lucy
The IT Crowd
Family Guy
Arrested Development
Archer
Movies Watched in 2016:
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead
Dinosaur 13
Steve Jobs (re-watch; Sorkin and Boyle; can't go wrong)
Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine
Nightcrawler (re-watch: love this movie)
Touching The Void (re-watch; one of my favorite docs)
13 Assassins (what a closing set-piece!)
The Apartment
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
The Imitation Game (such a great 'Oscar bait' movie)
Oldboy (re-watch; I had forgotten how great)
Sing Street
Quiz Show (re-watch)
Le Ballon Rouge
The Story of Qui Ju (or "A Kick in the Balls" as I like to call it)
The Jungle Book (pure cinematic magic)
Captain America: Civil War (pure cinematic slush)
Throne of Blood (my first time, really loved it)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (best Star Wars since Episode V)
Star Wars: A New Hope (Best Star Wars OTHER than Episode V)
Man With a Movie Camera (a "silent" film worth every frame)
Deadpool (so good)
Suicide Squad (so bad)
Sunrise (the old silent film-- not the Danny Boyle sci-fi movie)
A Prophet (what a great film!)
Jaws (re-watched for the 43rd time)
Jason Bourne (it was certainly a Bourne movie- not much else)
The 400 Blows
The Great Train Robbery
Star Trek Beyond (actually pretty good)
X-Men: Apocalypse (as expected)
Chinatown (re-watch)
Citizen Kane (re-watch)
The Lost City of Z (Apocalypse Now meets Laurence of Arabia; look for this film in 2017)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Silences of the Palace (a really great foreign film)
Arrival (one of my fav)
Beau Travail (no comment)
10 Cloverfield Lane (take out the last 10 minutes and this is one of my fav of the year as well)
The Shallows (take out the last 5 minutes and same thing)
The Nice Guys (loved it)
Hail, Caesar! (hated it)
The Exterminating Angel (not for everyone but I personally ended up loving it)
The Finest Hours (I wanted to like it more than I did cause this is a 'guilty pleasure' genre for me)
Citizenfour
Amour
Passion of Joan of Arc (one of the few silent films I saw that really blew me away)
Cleo From 5 to 7 (boring)
Do The Right Thing
42nd Street
Hell or High Water (what a great Indie film)
Eddie the Eagle (GUILTY PLEASURE alert! I liked it. Didn't LOVE it. But I liked it)
Rules of The Game
Bicycle Thieves
Swiss Army Man (def. top 5; nothing else like it this year)
Night and the City
Everybody Wants Some!!
M
How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (I was lucky enough to see the North American premiere where it was projected properly in the 4K, 3D, high frame rate and... no. I saw what he was trying to do with the format but the movie was just not good)
Apollo 13 (re-watch; this movie still gets me every time)
Pather Panchali (a fascinating Indian film; the first of a trilogy, I'm intrigued to see them)
Rebel Without A Cause (re-watch; what a classic film!)
That's it for now!!!
Here's to the MANY movies we will watch in 2017!!!
