Eisenstein's Methods of Montage Explained | Russian Montage Theory | VIDEO ESSAY

If you're a filmmaker, a critic or a cinephile you may have come across a one Sergei Eisenstein in your dealings with cinema and it's history. Eisenstein is considered one of the founding fathers of Russian Montage Theory and a pioneer in filmmaking. The problem is that a lot of his writings on film theory can be dense and dry-- making it difficult sometimes to discern what exactly he is saying.

By pulling his words apart and examining a number of examples-- both the ones Eisenstein used in his writings and more modern excerpts-- the following essay attempts to demystify and explain Eisenstein's Five Methods of Montage.
